 With the effort and vision of a group of producers Lemon and supported by the State of Chile, in January 2007 recognition for GI lemon Pica was requested , which after years of work and on 19 June 2009 is achieved publish the abstract of the application in the newspaper , officer, being officially recognized April 22, 2010 by the National Institute of Intellectual Property – INAPI under the framework of the law 19.039 of Appellations of Origin, currently constituting as the only agricultural product nationally to achieve this recognition.

 

This seal will protect this source Typical product Commune Pica, which is found in 71.7 hectares already planted, located in the towns of Pica, Matilla and Quisma Valley, production areas where it is produced the original LIMON PICA. Today, with the geographical indication, there are the legal conditions to favor the undertaking of more than 66 small producers Pica lemon, in order to increase competitiveness, improve the assessment of product quality, and give legal protection against a misleading eventual competition.

This seal also provides a better source of product information, which promotes consumer confidence.

Today more informed consumer prefers products with designation of origin, although the price is higher.

This communal achievement will allowimproving the transparency, regulating the supply of Pica lemons, preventing the selling of non-originating products and thereby,affecting better prices for producers fromPica.

The PICA LEMON is only one, and consumers will request this product with its SEAL OF ORIGIN, which will guarantee them to consume a product with quality attributes set on theChileanOfficial Standard forAcid Limes that states:

SMALL (> = 35 and <40mm) MEDIUM (> = 40 and <45mm) LARGE (<45mm)

Juice Content: Greater than 40%

The fruit color used to bring inharvest: Yellow and green.

Another outstanding feature of Pica Lemon is the “AROMA” which is determined by the presence of “LEMON TREE» which is different to other national and international acid limes sold in Chile. This attribute is determined by the agro-climatic characteristics of the productionarea and dry weather that is associated with a low humidity inducing stress and allowing the fruit to express its aroma. This larger and more intense aroma, is determined by the high limonene (essential oil) in its peel, which fluctuates between 45 and 50%, unlike the other limes as the subtle lemon ofVallenar, Ovalle and the Peruvian product where the of limonene contentranges from 5 to 13%.
